Facebook Has An Autoimmune Disease

I have been banned for life from facebook.

Over the Christmas/New Years break of 2024 i was away at an off grid music festival. Upon returning i found that my fb account had somehow been hacked. Fb had sent me numerous emails asking if i was trying to login from various Asian countries. Fb eventually and appropriately blocked my account. My profile name had been changed to “Bot” and my profile photo changed to a graphic depicting a head with a headset microphone.

To unblock the account, fb allows for an appeal process which i went through to prove i really am me, including copies of my passport, current photos and videos of my head, mobile phone where verification codes were sent, etc. Nowhere in the process is there an opportunity to explain what happened, it’s just a bunch of tick boxes. Fb’s response to the appeal is that my account violates their policies (doesn’t specify which) and that my account is permanently blocked with no further appeal. Well duh – i don’t doubt the hacker did all kinds of nefarious things that violate fb policies. I was given no chance to access the account to try and make things right.

So i thought i would just start over with a new account. Within a couple of days fb blocked the new account stating “our technology has determined that this account was created by someone who has been banned from fb”.

So that is the end of fb for me. Good on them for trying to fight the hackers, but they are killing off their good cells in the process.

Martha's Paddock 2014

We had a small gathering of muso's out at Martha's Paddock, overlooking Little Barrier Island in the Hauraki Gulf. It was a nice afternoon of picking with some good friends, and a nice excuse to get out of Auckland for a day.

Auckland Folk Festival 2014

I had the good fortune to play on the main stage of The Auckland Folk Festival this year with my band Rainberry Pie, and for one amazing song, "Northern Cross", with Victoria Vigenser and Andrea Reid. The weather was great all weekend which facilitated heaps of jamming and socializing and a very good time was had by all.

Tiritiri Matangi

Trude and I, and our friend Liane, took the ferry from Auckland out to Tiritiri Matangi island. We had sailed past many times over the years and this was our day to finally visit this amazing bird sanctuary. If you ever have the chance to go there, take it and spend the extra few dollars to get a guided tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic and made our visit a pleasant, informative and entertaining one. This is one project that all New Zealanders can be proud of.

Tall Ships 2014

We had a fabulous day of sailing in the Tall Ships regatta aboard Saskia with Kim and Sally, Larry and Karon, and Trude and I. The wind started off light and built as the day progressed, allowing all the big boats to get around the course in good time. We had good sailing, good company and as usual, a good evening party at the Russel Boating Club.

Tahora Music Festival 2013/2014

It was another great week of amazing music, great company, whacky goings on, a medieval wedding, endless jam sessions, fabulous weather, top shelf home brew, making new friends and renewing bonds with old ones. I was stoked to take delivery of my new Gretsch 6120TM and give it an inaugural play with the Tahora Blues Band.
