Auckland Folk Festival 2013

We had exceptionally fine weather this year which seemed to lift everyone's mood. Not being a booked performer this year it was nice to relax and not have to worry about having too much fun, which i didn't and did.
i was fortunate to get some stage time with Wires & Wood

and with

Rainberry Pie.

Whanganui River 2013

A group of ten of us spent a week traveling via five canoes through Whanganui National Park. Jenine did a fantastic job of planning the whole thing, including meal plans, purchasing the food, sorting out who was going to do what, when and where, as well as acting as general tour guide. Thank you!!!
In spite of it raining almost constantly (in a severe drought year) the entire week (which you don't see in the photos because the camera was stowed away from the rain), we had wonderful time, thanks to spectacular natural beauty and exceptionally good company. Putting up the tent in the rain, cooking in the rain, eating in the rain, sleeping in wet cloths, breaking camp in the rain, paddling in the rain - it was more than worth it (although Emily may disagree :-)). The spooky mist shrouded cliffs and numerous waterfalls only come with the rain.

Ellen - day 16 - 20 - Chilling out

After our great Kiwi road trip, we were all ready to chill out and enjoy being in Devonport and not having to go anywhere. We did manage to go out to some live music to send Peter and Helen off on their big UK adventure, see"Life of Pi" (a beautiful movie), and take long walks on the beach. We were sad to say goodbye to Ellen and went through a few days of empty nest syndrome as she made her way back to Dallas.

Ellen - Day 15 - Wellington to home

We blasted out of Wellington in the early morning and headed up the west coast with good views of Kapati Island. We had breakfast in Levin at the nice cafe that i can never remember the name of. Then it was on to Koitiata and Turakina Beach to visit our dear friend Pizy and stretch our legs with a long beach walk.

Wooden bones (driftwood) were scattered for kilometers along the beach, making photography irresistible. We had a nice catch up with Pizy and got to explore her new "Red Bach Gallery" where she sells her amazing copper creations.

From Koitiata it was about an hours drive to Hawera where we picked up Trude's new dog (yes, another Affenpinscher) "Tui" from the breeder. With Tui snuggled up next to Ellen in the back seat, we took the most direct route home, ending our great Kiwi road trip.

Ellen - Day 14 - Tui Farm to Wellington

We packed up the tent, said our goodbyes and sadly left Tui Farm. We had lunch in Nelson and stopped by for a cup of tea at our friend Tony Stephens' place. Tony and his family had also been at Tui Farm and we had a sort of catch up and debriefing. We had to get ourselves on the Picton to Wellington ferry by 6PM so we said goodbye to Tony and his family and took the less scenic route to Picton.

We had an easy ferry crossing in spite of the strong winds. My truck was doing a lively dance sitting on the deck of the ferry as we queued up to disembark. Checking into the backpackers for the night was an adventure, trying to keep ourselves and our luggage from getting literally blown away. It was the infamous Wellington welcome.

We were a bit weary of traveling and photography and we only have these two photos from inside the ferry to mark this day.

Ellen - Days 10-13 - Tui Farm Festival

We departed Wellington at 2AM on the car ferry and arrived in Picton to a misty dawn. The drive to Nelson was another twisty, up and down, road but with beautiful views of The Sounds. After having breakfast in the sleepy fishing village of Havelock, we continued on to Nelson were we stocked up on provisions. From Nelson it was just under an hour to the Tui Farm Music Festival site. We had camp established by 1PM and were seeking shade to get out of the blistering sun. We didn't know that would be last we would see of the sun for the entire five days of the festival.

In spite of the frequent rain and constant overcast, we still managed to greatly enjoy the festival. The jam sessions in the big tent kept me going well into the wee hours. The Liars Breakfast was absolutely hilarious. On New Years Eve night, the clouds parted just long enough to showcase the full moon rising over the mountains. It felt perfect to be sharing the start of the new year with this festival full of like minded souls. Ellen got a big dose of Kiwi culture.
